It functions as an integrated suite of software tools that facilitate real-time connectivity among groups of people involved in an event, thereby supporting more efficient response and coordination.

Key features include user status updates, geographic location tracking and mapping, and real-time alerts regarding imminent threats issued by both users and administrators. The application provides ongoing visibility into event progression through continuous user updates, responder equipment locations, and AED mapping for rapid deployment. It also offers detailed instructions from administrators or security personnel for emergency shelter-in-place, lockdown, or evacuation procedures.

The system incorporates quick-reference, color-coded phone directories organized by last known user status, enabling swift contact during crises. It supports the logging of event details and responder activities, documentation of drills and training exercises, and logging of security system events and personnel management activities.

Furthermore, EMMA includes features for managing communication during national incident management situations (NIMS), utilizing up-to-date push notification technology to ensure closed-loop communication.
